New Patients Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural method of health care with the proven ability to relieve back pain, increase vitality, and promote well-being. For over a century, doctors of chiropractic have successfully helped millions of individuals recover from spine-related health problems. As a result, chiropractic has earned its place as the largest drugless and non-surgical health care profession in the United States.

What can I expect on my first visit?

Dr. Kenneth Meisten will perform a thorough consultation including your health history, physical examination and x-ray examination. He will tailor a treatment plan specifically for you. You will receive heat, deep tissue electrical stimulation (using tools specifically designed to provide comfortable pulsations that penetrate through all the muscle layers releasing tension and fatigue) and your spinal adjustment.

What is an adjustment?

Adjustments can also be referred to as “specific spinal manipulation.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypo mobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.

Will my adjustment hurt?

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours. Ice packs are recommended if you are feeling any discomfort.

Its non-surgical, drug-free approach to health places chiropractic among the safest of all health care practices. Remember, chiropractic takes nothing out of the body and puts nothing in. As a result, chiropractors enjoy one of the lowest malpractice rates of all health care professionals.

What do you need from me?

On your first visit, we will need you to bring your driver’s license and insurance card. Our new patient form can be accessed by clicking here, or from the link above. You may choose to print and fill out the forms before your initial visit. Unfortunately, Acupuncture is currently not covered by any insurance company.

Please note:If your problem is due to an automobile injury or workers compensation injury, we will need to contact your insurance company immediately. We will need the necessary claim number, date and time of accident, telephone and addresses of your insurance company, and attorney information (if applicable).

Will I need x-rays?

X-rays are a vital part of your initial visit. We only take x-rays that are necessary to your diagnosis. Our office uses high-frequency technology so that your exposure is kept to a minimum. Pregnant women and children will not receive x-rays. We take x-rays because to see is to know, while not to see is to guess and we do not want to guess about your health.

Will my insurance cover my appointment? Is my insurance accepted?

Chiropractic has demonstrated itself to be one of the most cost-effective forms of care in all of the health care market.

Many health care plans provide coverage for chiropractic care. Many patients pay directly for care, as they discover chiropractic to be extremely cost-effective and affordable. We accept a wide variety of insurances at Carolina Health Innovations. Our insurance manager will provide you with all the information you will need on your insurance eligibility and benefits.  All co-pays are due at time of service.  Visa, MasterCard, and Discover are accepted.

What should I wear to my Chiropractic, Massage, or Acupuncture appointment?

While we suggest comfortable loose-fitting clothing, we understand that it is not always possible with busy lifestyles. You may wear business clothing but please keep in mind that your limbs need to be able to move freely for the Doctor. For Chiropractic and Massage Therapy, please keep jewelry to a minimum. For Acupuncture, please wear clothing that allows the elbows and knees to be easily accessible.
