Sports Chiropractor

What is a Sports Chiropractor?

I’m often asked what is a sports chiropractor. Although most chiropractors treat a range of problems related to various injuries, I like to define a sports chiropractor as someone who has extensive experience in dealing specifically with sports related injuries. Because of my background, both in school and with my prior experience as a fitness trainer for a number of years, I have seen firsthand many of the causes and effects of sports injury.

Sports Medicine and Rehab:

Sports Medicine is a loosely defined term but which generally includes preventing, diagnosing and treating sports and exercise related injuries. Specifically in a chiropractic environment, this means the aches and pain of joints and muscles caused by physical activities. Because by it’s very nature sports are competitive, one of my primary goals as a sports chiropractor is to help and enhance a speedy recovery of my patients, so that they can return to their training or activity. Although we treat many non-competitive patients similarly, when treating a sports related injury, the aim is to enable our patients to return to their chosen sport as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Common Sports Injuries:Sprained Ankle

  • Sprained Ankle
  • Knee Injuries
  • Elbow
  • Shoulder
  • Hamstring
  • Calf Strain
  • Achilles Tendon
  • Back
  • Fingers
  • Shin Splints

Now let’s take a look at some of these specifically:

Muscle pull: What is a pulled muscle? A muscle strain occurs when a muscle stressors are stronger than the muscle fibers to operate. The muscles try to contract and tear of muscle fibers. These injuries often occur during sports or trying to move heavy objects. Pulled muscles can effectively treated with chiropractic techniques.

Tennis Elbow – Golfer Elbow: These two conditions are similar in their respective sides of the elbow. These conditions are inflammation, pain or discomfort in the elbow joint. Each can be presented as point source or radiating pain in the right elbow. Sometimes the pain may radiate to the upper arm or forearm down. These conditions may become persistent and continue to increase in intensity with time.

Frozen Shoulder: Frozen shoulder is when the shoulder is painful and loses the motion due to inflammation. This condition can occur in many phases, which increases with the pain and decrease range of motion as they go, until finally the range of motion is effectively lost. Treatment of frozen shoulder can be difficult, but with the right techniques, mobilizations and pain can be reduced and restore motion.

Runner’s Knee: Runner’s knee is not really a condition in itself. It is a loose term for several specific disorders with different causes. The best description of the runner’s knee is an overuse injury that causes irritation of the nerves of the patella (knee) or overloaded tendons. (Tendons are what connect muscle to bone.). Treatment includes various techniques of physical medicine and education on proper technique and equipment running.

Shin splints: Shin splints term refers to pain along or just behind the tibia (shin bone), the large bone in the front of the leg. Shin splints occur during physical activity and the result of excessive force on the connective tissue and bone of the shin muscles connect to it. Shin splints are common in runners and those participating in activities with sudden stops and starts.

Ankle sprains: Ankle sprains can be some of the easiest conditions to treat or some of the most difficult, depending on how long ago the injury occurred. The faster we can get our hands on the injured ankle the faster the person can return to their respective activities. Chiropractic manipulations are the preferred techniques we use in the treatment of all types of ankle sprains.

As you can see, sports injuries can affect many parts of your body. And as kids become more competitive at an earlier age and youth sports programs become more performance oriented, even younger kids can benefit from chiropractic treatment. That’s why having an experienced sports chiropractor is important in helping you get back to your chosen activity. Having a good sports chiropractor at your side can make a big difference in highly competitive sports, both amateur and professional.
